About the Scales Series
This painting depicts avenues of somnolent, deeply layered trees, slightly askew and abstracted against a pale blue sky. It was inspired through reflection on paths taken (or not), and a certain nostalgia at the point of mid-life. The use of mixed references from Europe and Aoteoroa point to life lived between Barcelona and Ohiwa harbour with my Ukrainian-born wife. Long-standing post-modern and kitsch influences are apparent in the collaged feel of different elements, enhancing a subtle sense of displacement. The image marks the direction of my ongoing visual enquiry, with the geometry inherent in our natural surroundings increasingly drawn out.
